The Property

Sweet songs of hawaiian birds in the distance are heard as you wake to the sun lifting thru the morning rain clouds, flooding the room with light. Our property is surrounded by tropical foliage in every corner as more than a hundred surf and windsurf boards enclose the well manicured yards. Our newly remodeled home and cottage are often the home away from homes for our guests or as we like to call them extended families from around the world. People that we open our homes too, to share our little piece of paradise and let them experience what we love so much about our sweet north shore of Maui and small surf town of Haiku.

However, our property was not always as you see it today. Let’s take a step back 5 years.... Imagine our property as this once run down, boarded up abandoned cane house and cottage engulfed in overgrown cane grass that was frowned upon by the neighbors. Our realtor wouldn’t even walk the property with us when we first asked to look at it! The front house was a real shack or what was called a complete teardown. Then there was this small pathway that led thru 6 foot cane grass back to the lower house, you couldn’t see one house from the other. Each home came with a pungent smell and plenty of cleanup that would send most people running.... but not us. We came with an open mind and luckily could see a glimpse of potential to take on this project we would eventually call home. We came in and brought this property back to life with lots and I mean lots of love and TLC. Every where you look on the property we have worked tirelessly over the last 5 years to bring out the best of our land and homes. We left no wall untouched as we remodeled both homes to their original forms. We hand worked our yards to bring them into control, remove all debris and slowly adding tropical foliage back in. Every plant you see we planted, every fence you see we built, and almost all the furniture and decor in the home and cottage was handmade by Amy. It is an ongoing project and labor of love that is forever evolving. You won’t find another property like it anywhere and we love that uniqueness that we are able to share with our guests.

We invite you to come stay with us and be our guests in our Haiku Surf Cottage or Haiku Surf House. Our property sits in the heart of Haiku within walking distance to the Pauwela Cannery. With morning coffee and scones at Baked on Maui cafe or a quick late night snack at the locally owned Pauwela Store, we couldn't have imagined living anywhere else on the North Shore of Maui. Just bring your clothes and Aloha spirit and let us welcome you to your home away from home.

Our ideal guests are returning Maui visitors that want to experience something different than the resorts.

Or first time guests that want to experience Maui like a local resident away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas.  Many guests stay with us to explore the North shore, Hana and Haleakala as we are in the ideal location to these beautiful wonders of maui.

Enter our family friendly neighborhood, where we are located at the end of a private street.  Our Haiku Surf Property in Maui has 2 newly remodeled homes that we rent out separately for short term stays of 14 days or less.

Our Haiku Surf House has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, is 800 sq feet and accommodates up to 4 adults and 2 kids under 12 years old.  Our Haiku Surf Cottage has 2 bedroom, 1 bath, is 600 sq feet and accommodates up to 4 adults or a small family of 4 guests.  Each home has it's own parking and private yards and are separated from each other on the property.  The property is bordered by a custom SURF BOARD FENCE that runs from the front to the back of the property.  We do not have any animals on the property however our neighborhood is filled with country style homes with open land.  Which means at certain times of year (springtime usually) we may have wild roosters crowing in the morning, Mama chicken and her babies passing thru the yard, cats roaming the streets, geckos gheckoing, tropical birds chirping or dogs barking on occasion.  And since we live in a neighborhood you may also hear kids playing and neighbors having BBQ's just like you may hear at home!  Just remember, this is real life, not a hotel. The best little coffee cafe in Haiku is only a 2 minute walk out the back gate.  You'll also find next door to the cafe, a local healthy grocery store ran by a local Haiku family! Both homes have everything you would need for your stay- just bring your clothes and aloha spirit.

Continue to read below for more information about our property and area.  When ready, click on House or Cottage from the menu above or click on pictures to view information and see pictures of each individual rental. We book our homes thru Airbnb and VRBO only, therefore you can view our availability and book your stay thru one of these booking platforms.

Property Location

Our Area of Haiku

We are located on the non-touristy side of the island. All sides of maui are quite different and each season is different on each side of the island as well. Our north shore is great for adventurous guests looking for a quiet getaway in a local residence, while exploring the surrounding towns and north shore of maui. Our surrounding small towns are great for shopping and getting lunch or early dinner as shops close by 5pm and restaurants by 8:30-9pm. Unfortunately we don't have much night life to offer on our side of the island since mostly locals reside here. Our beaches on the north shore are known for surf waves and windsurfing- great people watching or sunbathing however many are not usually calm for swimming or snorkeling most months. The North shore is located on the edge of the rainforest which makes our area beautifully green and lush this is because we get enough natural rain year round to keep everything green without watering systems. We also get natural tradewinds year round that usually keeps our north shore 5-10 degrees cooler than the tourist sides of the island and cools down our evening temps, which is a blessing. And we usually do not get colder temps than 65 degrees F rarely, therefore our north shore homes were not built with air conditioning or heating systems, just ceiling fans and windows to self regulate our homes inside temperature. It is good to remember though that Maui is a tropical island, so our temperatures are humid and an average high of 75-85 degrees F. When you first arrive on island our temperatures can feel warmer than what you are used to at home until you get acclimated to the weather. So we like to mention if you live in air conditioning at your house and like your home on the cooler side then our place may not be a good fit for you.

Your stay is important to us and we want to make sure your vacation expectations are met while on island. If you are looking to experience what it is like to live in traditional home in a local Maui neighborhood and explore the island, we are in a great location to do that. However if being close to calm beaches, night life and where more action is, we actually recommend guests stay in Kaanapali or Kihei on the south and west shores of maui. These areas are in the best locations on island for weather and the Maui experience you have seen in magazines and movies.
In these areas you are close to everything and you can just do a day trip to the north shore to check it out.

Haiku is a great base for adventurous guests to explore the island:

* We are only a 20-minute drive from the airport.
* Hookipa Beach is 5 mile drive from the house.
* Paia, named the “Happiest Seaside Town” by Coastal Living magazine, is 8 mile drive offering with great shopping, good food, yoga and beautiful beaches.
* The historic town of Makawao is a 8 mile drive away where you will find art galleries, clothing boutiques, great restaurants, cafes, yoga, and a multitude of healing arts.
* Drive through Upcountry Maui, to the top of the Haleakala Crater in just 90 minutes for beautiful sunrise or sunset views.
* The south side - tourist side of the island with calm beaches and snorkeling
of Makena, Wailea, and Kihei are a little over half an hour away.
* The drive to Lahaina or further up the coast on the west side
- tourist side of the island, takes 45-minutes to an hour, depending on road conditions for shopping on famous front street in Lahaina and nightlife.
* Driving the Road to Hana is one of our favorite adventures and reaching the town of Hana itself will take about 2 hours depending on how many stops you make along the way.
