The Property

Sweet songs of hawaiian birds in the distance are heard as you wake to the sun lifting thru the morning rain clouds, flooding the room with light. Our property is surrounded by tropical foliage in every corner as more than a hundred surf and windsurf boards enclose the well manicured yards of fresh fruit and herbs in the garden. Starting in late June, Avocados the size of grapefruit or larger, fall from the sky daily for our guests to feast on. With enough left overs for the wild mother hen and her baby’s, who come waddling in from behind the surfboard fence, get their share too. Our newly remodeled home and cottage are often the home away from homes for our guests or as we like to call them extended families from around the world. People that we open our homes too, to share our little piece of paradise and let them experience what we love so much about our sweet north shore of Maui and small surf town of Haiku.

However, our property was not always as you see it today. Let’s take a step back 5 years.... Imagine our property as this once run down, boarded up abandoned cane house and cottage engulfed in overgrown cane grass that was frowned upon by the neighbors. Our realtor wouldn’t even walk the property with us when we first asked to look at it! The front house was a real shack or what was called a complete teardown. Then there was this small pathway that led thru 6 foot cane grass back to the lower house, you couldn’t see one house from the other. Each home came with a pungent smell and plenty of cleanup that would send most people running.... but not us. We came with an open mind and luckily could see a glimpse of potential to take on this project we would eventually call home. We came in and brought this property back to life with lots and I mean lots of love and TLC. Every where you look on the property we have worked tirelessly over the last 5 years to bring out the best of our land and homes. We left no wall untouched as we remodeled both homes to their original forms. We hand worked our yards to bring them into control, remove all debris and slowly adding tropical foliage back in. Every plant you see we planted, every fence you see we built, and almost all the furniture and decor in the home and cottage was handmade by Amy. It is an ongoing project and labor of love that is forever evolving. You won’t find another property like it anywhere and we love that uniqueness that we are able to share with our guests.

We invite you to come stay with us and be our guests in our Haiku Surf Cottage or Haiku Surf House. Our property sits in the heart of Haiku within walking distance to the Pauwela Cannery. With morning coffee and scones at Baked on Maui cafe or a quick late night snack at the locally owned Pauwela Store, we couldn't have imagined living anywhere else on the North Shore of Maui. Just bring your clothes and Aloha spirit and let us welcome you to your home away from home.

Property Location

Our Area of Haiku

Our home is conveniently located in a quiet family neighborhood within 2 minute walk to the best local coffee cafe in Haiku town, Baked on Maui in the Pauwela Cannery.  There is also a video store with a variety of grocery amenities, hardware store, windsurf and surf shops etc... You are welcome to walk thru the property and out the back gate for a quick shortcut to the cannery.  We do not have any animals on the property however our neighborhood is filled with country style homes with open land.  Which means at certain times of year (springtime usually) we may have roosters crowing in the morning as they are wild in Maui, cats roaming the streets (also wild), mama chicken and her babies passing thru the garden, geckos gheckoing, tropical birds chirping or dogs barking on occasion.  And since we live in a neighborhood you may also hear kids playing and neighbors having BBQ's just like you may hear at home!  Just remember, this is real life, not a hotel.

Our guests choose our property because they want to enjoy Maui not as a tourist in a hotel but as a Maui local in a neighborhood.  If this is the experience you are looking for then we think our property will be your perfect home away from home.

Weather

Haiku is located on the north side of Maui with perfect island weather of about 80 degrees year round.  We get cooler nights, often with rain which keeps our surroundings green and lush and days kissed by the sun and trade winds.

Things Nearby

The airport is only 20 minutes away, but you will feel like you are miles from the hustle and bustle of it all.  Around Haiku are countless activities and natural resources to explore, such as shopping, hiking, surfing, waterfalls, beaches, zip lining, and horseback riding.  Haiku is a balanced mix of locals and travelers. In town you have access to a variety of great restaurants, a grocery store, the Maui Kombucha bar, a post office, medical doctor, massage and acupuncture clinic, chiropractic studio, spa and yoga studio, hardware store, and a local gas station run by Mr Ching who pumps your gas for you. The famous Hookipa Beach Park is only 10 minutes away where the local surfers and windsurfers go for the best north shore waves.  The towns of Paia and Makawao are located 15 minutes away where you can find some of our favorite shops and restaurants.

Haiku is a great base from which to explore the island:

* We are only a 20-minute drive from the airport.
* Hookipa Beach is 5 mile drive from the house.
* Paia, named the “Happiest Seaside Town” by Coastal Living magazine, is 8 mile drive offering with great shopping, good food, yoga and beautiful beaches.
* The historic town of Makawao is a 8 mile drive away where you will find art galleries, clothing boutiques, great restaurants, cafes, yoga, and a multitude of healing arts.
* Drive through Upcountry Maui, to the top of the Haleakala Crater in just 90 minutes for beautiful sunrise or sunset views.
* The south side beaches of Makena, Wailea, and Kihei are a little over half an hour away.
* The drive to Lahaina or further up the coast on the west side, takes 45-minutes to an hour, depending on road conditions.
* Driving the Road to Hana is one of our favorite adventures and reaching the town of Hana itself will take about 2 hours depending on how many stops you make along the way.
